Our Digital Art classes act as both a leaping-off point for students into the world of Digital Art and a way to build on the fundamentals of art in the digital medium.

What We Teach

Weekly Skills

All digital art classes will have drawing involved and teach students figure drawing, character design, creating different color effects, and different genres of illustration.

Procreate topics include
  • Layers, selection, and transforms
  • Different masks and blending modes
  • Making gradients and color alterations
  • Using different brushes and settings

Teachers

Sean • Tonya

The teachers for the classes are Sean and Tonya, who are both professional illustrators with their works published in various media.

The teachers will teach a different topic and focus every week, so students can come to one class per week or all three for more practice on that week’s topics.

Students bring an Apple Pencil and an iPad with Procreate downloaded on it.

Need to borrow an iPad? The school provides iPads for student use, but we have a limited number available. Please check ahead of time if your student needs to use one.

Small Groups
  • 60 minutes to learn, practice, and create every week
  • Maximum of 15 students to ensure quality instruction
  • Each class teaches a different project that teaches different digital drawing skills, tools, and techniques.
  • Same price as other 90-minute group fine art classes
  • Use the same class credits from 90-minute group class packages

August 2026 Introduction to Procreate – UI, Important sub-menus such as how to add references or change settings, Layers, and fundamental tools.
September 2026 Introduction to Digital Art – Clipping Masks, Fill Tool, Layer Groups, Selection + Transform Tool
October 2026 Customizing your Experience – Adding Gesture Controls, Importing/Making New Brushes, etc
November 2026 Workflow Efficiency – Learning ways to speed up your workflow through combination of previously learned skills, such as selecting an area then using clipping masks to eliminate the need to worry about going outside the lines
December 2026 Value Studying – Using Digital Art to easily set up and work on Value Studies
January 2027 Perspective – Learn how to set up Perspective Grids in Procreate, as well as how perspective works in real life
February 2027 Collecting Good Reference – (Optionally using VizRef) The importance of using reference in your art
March 2027 Unusual Workflows - Start with a combination of filters, colors, and altered images on your piece to give yourself a new way to work.
April 2027 Basics of Composition – Rule of thirds, value differences, guiding lines
May 2027 When Colors Don’t Work – Ways to set up your painting to more easily change out colors if they aren’t working as you go.
June 2027 One Big Project

Digital Art Program Curriculum

Beginner → Advanced
Topic Beginner Intermediate Advanced
Software Interfacing with your software. Basic tools like brushes, layers, opacity control, etc. Layer masks, blending modes, and various selection options. Making/changing brush settings, using filters, altering levels and color settings.
Drawing Feeling comfortable drawing on your digital device the same way you would on paper. Anatomy, adding dimension/shading, perspective, and shared fundamentals. Using reference to create new drawings and further fundamentals development.
Painting Adding basic colors and painting as though using real paint. Mixing/blending colors and building fundamentals of color & values. Original compositions, colored appropriately using reference and prior skills.
Illustration Techniques N/A Composition, value/color study, perspective in compositions, etc. Original illustrations with unique compositions built using developed fundamentals.
